Assertive Skills and Your Summer

Summer is coming and although school will be out of session, do not neglect your assertive skills tools.  You will need them now – more than ever!  Be clear with your brother about your electronic devices by stating “I” messages.  For example, “May I use your 3DS for an hour?”   Reread the section on conflict management for reduced fights at home.  Set a goal or two for the summer; a reasonable accomplishment that you can be proud of.

    My mom got me one of the Assertive books before summer started, and I have to admit, I have been finding it helpful! Especially the last post you wrote, about the “I” statements. It reminds me of the “Broken Record” part of the book. Just like how the “Broken Record” statements help me be heard with my family and friends, so do the “I” sentences. I’ve been using both with my brother and sister so far this summer, and I think they’ve been making a difference! They respect me more and listen to what I am saying. I think it is a good idea to set goals for the summer, and the book has been helping my self esteem. Thank you and I’ll keep practicing my assertiveness with “I” statements and “Broken Record” sentences.
